Summary: Here is footage of the demolition of Anna Bhau Sathe Nagar on May 12, 2010, recorded by the activists of the Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao Andolan. Anna Bhau Sathe Nagar, a slum settlement of approximately 3,000 families, lies in the north-eastern suburb of Mankhurd in Mumbai. It is named after the famous lok shahir (folk poet), and most people living here are from Dalit and minority communities.

..Yesterday then tai came here and I am here since two days- today as well as yesterday. And about that one hut.. as it is said that this is the land of Bombay Factory.. and the collector has signed the list.. if the list of 99 has been given to us poor.. I told some policemen yesterday, that a little land shiuld be given.
The poor should be given land on lease. This is our right. (Claps). Tai pursues the big builders. Hiranandani has been fined on Rs. 2,000 crores. He is trying to lessen the amount. I won't speak about Hiranandani. I am a poor person on the street. You know that tai has elected me. Sathe Nagar isn't for me.
You know the truth is, when I was elected, a lot of people and huts had been razed down. As tai said, the bulldozer can raze her too tomorrow. I have tried to explain all of this. The owner of the mill had been told to give empty space. You should have supported us that time.
If that had been so, all these people wouldn't be here. (Inaudible). I fele the way the inquiry should go on.. the tenperature is 41 degrees.. because of that there are water problems here. I feel it is right to demolish these hutments. Tai said that this is because of some people.
I haven't seen what kind of builders they are. Maybe some other locals are involved in it. I don't know which kind of builder is involved in this. You can ask anyone- we have never interfered in the affairs of this place. Whenver people come to me, I give them the identity proof.. I do all their work- be it of passbooks of bank.
If one has work with the collector, that time I myself had been present.. when this slum was declared, I had said I could be of service to it. Water and electricity facilities have been provided.. facility of a toilet has been provided.. if this is declared as a slum..

They didn't demolish it.. they didn't ask if we had vacated the place or not.. they didn't bother about the kids.. they were not bothered about our lives.. when we tried to explain to them..
