SOLVING SQUATTER PROBLEM
Bombay Conference
Ways and means to solve the squatter problem in Bombay city were discussed at a tripartite conference of representatives of the State Government, the Bombay Municipal Corporation and the Port Trust, convened by the Home Minister, Mr. Morarji Desai, at the Bombay Secretariat on Thursday. Mr. Desai presided.
One of the suggestions considered at the conference was to set apart certain Government and municipal lands and mark them out into plots to be leased to squatters at rents to build huts thereon.
The conference considered a proposal that the Port Trust authorities should set apart plots of lands belonging to them which might be made available to their own employees.
According to the survey made by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in May last year, there are 8,000 unauthorised about hutments in Bombay city, accommodating about 38,000 people.
Present at the conference were Dr. Jivraj N. Mehta, Minister for Public Works; Mr. M. D. Bhat, Chief Secretary to Government; Mr. V. T. Dahejia, Home Secretary, Mr. B. A. Bambawale, Revenue Secretary; Mr. L. T. Gholap, Chairman of the Port Trust; Mr. B. K. Patel, Municipal Commissioner; and Mr. M. M. Chudasama, Commissioner of Police.
