A ride through the industrial district around Roshanara Road, New Delhi. We come across various sites and histories of the "industrial age" in the city, and its related narratives of automation, pollution, labour and closure. The tour is on cycle rickshaws, with rickshawwallahs as narrators and guides.

Sites visited include houses in the shadow of the new metro, a hundred year-old ice factory, a car-cover karkhana, a derelict cinema, motor repair and re-boring shops, a printing press transported from Lahore, a famous clock tower, amongst others.

It is there, like, for somebody who is totally new to this kind of area and been in Delhi for a long time, once you go, you just get a glimpse of what is Delhi made of, so that is an experience of art also and....

Shaina: Ya...they will.
Musafir 1: Yes. So it's a kind of a transition also...
Shaina: Lot of the motor shops have gone to some exhibition in Habitat to see 2021. And they have seen the full transformation of the area.
Musafir 1: Yes. Haan so that's it...for...

Shaina: Our tour is coming to an end, how did you like it? The entire experience?
Rickshawalla 1: Me? I felt like a man who has been taken to a mango tree, and while reaching there, the man sees that there is a ripe mango on the tree which I will pluck and eat. Then, when he reaches the mango tree, he is driven away. That is how I feel.
Shaina: As in? I did not understand.
Rickshawalla 1: I have given you the example, now what is left to explain?
Shaina: Explain it to me.

Rickshawalla 1: It is like this. A flicker of a certain expectation has been raised. The light is burning, and before it's time it has been extinguished.
I mean to say, man chooses something. For example; if some new food item has come into the market, then for a few days the man feels that some new variety has arrived and is tasty to eat. After that, when slowly, the production of the item increases and the message spreads through word of mouth, then the shopkeeper will be able to sell the item well. Isn't that right?
Shaina: You are right.

Rickshawalla 1 : Like, the Project Motornama. If you see, so many artists have come and left. So now, if one artist leaves, he goes and tells 10 other artists that there is a function at a certain place. So now, according to me, a kind of light has been lit but now that the candle is filled well with oil, now, the matter is coming to an end.

Rickshawalla 3: He was an inhabitant of this vegetable marketplace. He was a Lala.
Musafir 4: By Lala you mean someone who was from old times?
Rickshawalla 3: Yes. From old times. For many years since 1941, a lot of workers have lived here. Thousands in number. Over there was the Birla Mill.

Rickshawalla 3: Yes. It is working...and based on it's time, the workers used to go to work. In the beginning there used to be a sound, but now it has lessened. On hearing the sound they used to start work in the morning and in the afternoon, after hearing the sound of the clock they used to have lunch and in the evening hearing the sound of this clock they used to...
Musafir 4: You mean the cloth mills used to shut at the sound of the clock?
Rickshawalla 3: Yes, they used to shut.

Shaina: There were a lot of mills here.
Rickshawalla 3: There were a lot of mills.
Offscreen voice: All the mills here are shut.

Bystander: Birla mills...all mills are shut down.
Shaina: We know.

Rickshawalla 3: Let us go now...

Sardarji: This is a grinder.
Shaina: Yes.
Sardarji: And there is grinding happening now.
Shaina: So,you repair trucks?
Sardarji: Yes.Trucks, Cars. Everything.

Shaina: So from when has it been down? Since the sealing? Or before that?
Sardarji: From the sealing...(inaudible).

Rickshawalla 4: There are a lot of things I want to show you. In front of you, you are seeing thread being made. And from what is thread made, sir? From kapas (cotton). Cotton, which is called 'rui' in Hindi, in India. That is called kapas. So sir, where does this cotton come from? It comes from many places, but one place produces a lot of it. In Maharashtra there is a village called Vidharba. Sir, in their black soil, this used to be grown a lot. But the sad thing is that now, it is produced very less.Why so less? Less because now there is a seed, a hybrid, which is called BT Cotton. That seed is so dangerous, that once you sow it, then the next time it does not produce any more seeds. The farmer has to go back to the city to buy it, and again sow it and then he will be able to grow it again. So because of all these complications, the farming has reduced. But, the expense is the same, but the produce is less. Now, the children will demand the same expenses, right? Now, because of the...
Musafir 6: Will anything come...it won't come in the light right?

Rickshawalla 4: These threads are made from cotton and from these threads is made cloth. This cloth is used to make our beds and bedsheets, but the sad thing is, sir, because of lack of cotton, even this is produced less. But, sir, previously this work used to go on well. It used to make a sound. This is our first Motornama, sir. Come along, sir.

Musafir 6: ...after concrete has come in...cement...after cement.
Shaina: No one read the year na?
Musafir 6: It will be just after cement, we can use some cement...and...but with the wood and the pillars...

Musafir 6: Now should I start it?

Rickshawalla 5: Uttam Nagar. Sir, Uttam Nagar....(?) Foreigners, when they came, used to stay here. But now it has become the opposite. Now, from there, one has to come here. First one used to go from here to there...

Rickshawalla 6: Since after our independence this place was just like this for 35 years, but few of our brothers from Bikaner did such things that it was possible to enter this place again. Otherwise this place was known to be a haunted house.
Musafir 6: Really!

Rickshawalla 5: In British times, sir, this used to be a big godown of tents. When the British left, sir, then for sometime, they used to manafacture gunny bags. By gunny bags I mean when grains, wheat, used to come from the villages by truck, then then it is stored in gunny bags. So,sir, that used to be made here. So then when that too did not work, they stopped that and left. So this place was shut for very long. This place became like a haunted house. But sir, the thing is, some people came from Bikaner...come sir.

Offscreen voice: The wood from old times is the same as the iron of today.

Rickshawalla 4:...So new-new cars are coming in, sir, so to save it from dirt and dust, these people opened a factory of car covers. So, I will show you below how the covers are used.
