In a world drowning in plastic, Zemithang asks a bold question: can community-based efforts overcome the throwaway culture? Nestled in the Eastern Himalayas, this village in Arunachal Pradesh is quietly scripting a revolution in waste management, driven by individuals passionate about handling plastic waste responsibly.
Zemithang, one of the most picturesque villages in Tawang district, struggled for years with waste being dumped indiscriminately—in the streets, in rivers, and elsewhere. Social services rarely cleaned up, often only once a month. But with the efforts of the Further and Beyond Foundation, spearheading the Himalayan Fringes Project, waste management in the valley has improved significantly. Both the local government and the community have supported the initiative at every step. Their combined efforts led to the annual Gorsam Kora Festival being declared a Zero Waste Festival in 2024.
Not all change is loud—some hums quietly through community clean-ups and sustainable practices. The project has educated students, youth, and elders about alternatives to single-use plastic. Today, households segregate their waste before handing it over for further processing.
Two GreenHub fellows from the eighth batch, Pelinglungbe and Dechen Droker, documented the evolution of Zemithang’s waste management system during their internship. This film highlights the collaborative efforts of the community and organizations, demonstrating how local action can create a ripple effect toward sustainability.
