Fellowship Film: Forest of Hope - Mouling's Bioresources
In the dense, breathing forests of Arunachal Pradesh, life flutters in a thousand colours – if only you know where to look.
Under the Canopy of Mouling is a 16-minute documentary that invites the viewers to Mouling National Park, one of the most remote yet biologically rich landscapes. Through the lens of the conservation efforts led by the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment’s Siang valley project in collaboration with the Forest Department of Arunachal Pradesh, the film brings into focus the vibrant world of over 700 wild bio-resources recorded, the region presents an urgent case for inclusive conservation.
The film also takes note of how these bioresources are not only sources of food, medicine and shelter, but also central to cultural life. Unlike urban populations, communities here maintain a deep generational relationship with the bioresources from the forests, consuming and using species that are otherwise forgotten. These resources are extremely crucial for sustenance, shelter and ritual life.
However, erratic weather patterns and generational disconnection from traditional knowledge threaten this delicate balance.
The focus on capacity building programmes, community-led core management model and
pioneering grassroots institutions by the Siang Valley Project team, in collaboration with the Forest Department has set a tone for the conservation trajectory that will follow in and around the Mouling National Park for the years to come.
This is a film by two GreenHub eighth batch fellows, Linda Horam and Takar Pujen during their internship with ATREE in Siang, Arunachal Pradesh.
