Film Title: Lawkyntang, A Sacred Grove Binds Us Together
Set in Laitkynsew village in the Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, this short film explores the efforts to preserve sacred groves, known as ‘Lawkyntang’, which are vital for protecting wildlife and medicinal plants. These sacred groves benefit both nature and the local communities. However, only a few of the 215 sacred groves across the region remain intact, and the film follows a team working to revive them.
The Ka Synjuk Ki Hima Arliang Wah Umiam Mawphlang Welfare Society leads these conservation efforts through community-run projects, including a REDD+ initiative aimed at halting deforestation, reversing environmental damage, and regenerating forests. The film also touches on the challenges faced by local villagers, many of whom take up daily-wage work in stone quarries. By offering alternative livelihood options, the project seeks to reduce dependence on environmentally harmful activities.
The film highlights ecotourism as a growing initiative in Laitkynsew village, providing opportunities for youth to work as tour guides and for women to engage in hospitality.
The Ka Synjuk Ki Hima Arliang Wah Umiam Mawphlang Welfare Society (KSKHAW-UMWS), also referred to as the Federation, is a non-profit organization representing 10 indigenous Khasi governments and their 62 villages.
