Summary: People’s Panchayats on Resisting Stigma and Homophobia; Action Plus - a Coalition for Rights, Education and Care in HIV and AIDS. Father Francis Guntipalli, a member of the Bangalore Panch, shares his response to the testimonials of the experts. Father Francis speaks to the history of Christianity, and the religion's relationship with minority identity. He also talks about pedophilia within the Church, and some of the challenges that this has posed to members of the religious community.

So we were talking about the various kinds of stigma that exists, I think stigma is not just with only trans gender people, stigma is there with the people of various disabilities also and acceptance and living with and so on, this has been a problem, what is lacking is the understanding in people and how this understanding can be done and how this whole interpretation can be done is an important perspective, we notice somebody with a deformed face or deformed situations, nobody wants to associate also, students, there has been a process of integration but that integration is not paying so basic need is education. Then there is always this dominant group oppressing the smaller group or minority community and therefore there is always a walkover and there is always a need of showing who you are as against who others are kind of thing so I think probably that needs to be questioned and seen and again coming to that, the whole perspective of looking at everything in reality should be human rights perspective and we need to respect human rights and work with that human rights perspective and that can happen. Coming to Arvind's question with regard to Church and Church's position, will they be able to take people with trans gender or many genders into becoming priests or becoming this, from of old there has been a so called defilement not being straight and therefore not being accepted, see when I had to become a priest we had to undergo a medical test to say that you are a man, like you had Shobha or somebody an athlete who won in the Asian games in Doha and she was stripped of her position because her gender was questioned, similarly also there is a question and at that same time there is a movement, there are people with lots of sexual orientation whether is homosexual or others and if you look at the American church where many of the priests have been held for pedifelia and things like that and all those difficulties, there have been issues, Church is addressing to such an extent, there are some churches who have accepted, first of all leave alone priest hood for, trans gender priest hood for females are also not a possibility so again when there are women again disabilities are starting there and dignities are not being given.

Church in it's tenets are one thing but progomatization or bringing it to fruition is another thing and I wanted to say earlier also, a dominant community always dictates terms whether it is question of Church or question of science, see slavery has been justified and even anthropology justified slavery saying people from Africa have got small brains and brain structure and therefore they are like that and like that but in actuality they have forced science to think in those terms because the dominant group thought it so, there are places where such things have been faught and yet they have not succeeded because dominant group always succeeded if you watch the movie Mission you see the Jesuits fighting out this Spanish hegemony over the statement saying that tribal's and the local people are not human beings even a very basic thing because how can they sing so well, they could sing as much or as well as anybody in the western world and still they were not accepted so also we find that the dominant group dominates and interprets every reality to suit their own personal ends so that is what we need to fight at and fight for and only if we are exposed only if we question every reality as I said earlier even Bible needs to be looked at in it's context of whether you call it historical criticism or literary criticism or whatever criticism you look at, Bible needs to be seen in it's origin and it's development and how it went on so also we need to look at every interpretation that has come in those contexts and re interpret it and re work, there has been a movement in Christianity to re look at the whole Bible itself and I hope it takes us forward. Thank you.
