Summary: In 2018, after graduating from Green Hub, Wanmei wanted to channel his passion for conservation towards his community and village. At the same time, Green Hub was accepting small grants for their alumni interested in conservation work within their community. Along with his friends, Wanmei formed a Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) in Changlangshu to restore forests and protect the wildlife in the region, becoming the first recipient of the grant.
The BMC now has a membership of over 25, and are helping restore a degraded area through nurseries and tree plantations. Wanmeis location is one of the pilot forest project sites, and every year the fellows from the new batch visit the site for video documentation. Wanmei is a great mentor to other fellows and is immensely talented with the camera as well as storytelling.
The Forest restoration project of Biodiversity Management Committee of Changlangshu is a long term initiative to connect the three small patches of forest areas namely: Eaknyak forest, Langkea forest and Obajung forest into one intact forest by converting jhum fields which are situated contiguous between these forest areas into permanent reserve forest area.
