Avenue Road
MI (Male Interviewer): Now you've taken a loan quite a few times.. What's the difference between taking a loan elsewhere and from here
W2 (Woman From Kamala S.H.G): The interest here's less, there it's more

Male Member describing the setting up and functioning of the two Women's Self Help Groups Gulabi and Kamala at Avenue Road
Male wearing white shirt (MI): Now we've been working here for the past 2 years
Then we started these 2 groups. Gulabi and Kamala. In both these groups we have been saving and taking loans. Similarly another set of people asked to be part of the group and we set up the third group called the Indira Gandhi group. Now in these two groups, Gulabi and Kamala, we have saved 10,000 each.

MI: Now the third group, the Indira Gandhi group too has saved close to rupees six thousand. And all three groups have bank accounts. And small amounts less than Rs. 500 are given but for larger amounts we decide in the group and issue cheques right here in group meetings with the signatures of the two elected representatives.
Male Member (MI) describing the setting up and functioning of the two Women's Self Help Groups Gulabi and Kamala at Avenue Road

MI: In the first group we've selected Antonyamma and Dhanabhagya as signatories. In the second group Gulabi...
voice: Kamala
MI: Kamala we have Nazia and Arul as signatories. In the third we have celia and Muniamma. These two have been selected. Now where have we opened the bank account. We've opened the account at the Banashankari Mahila Cooperative Bank. Now we congregate every thursday and add our savings. Now loans from 500 to 2000 have been taken on this saved ammount.
Male Member (MI) describing the setting up and functioning of the two Women's Self Help Groups Gulabi and Kamala at Avenue Road

MI: Now for every 100 you've taken you've been returning it and for every week you pay an interest of 3 rupees. Now earlier you would be paying 200 rupees for every 1000. Earlier whom would you be paying this to, tell me?
Voice of woman member: Outside lenders
MI: yes, the outside lenders. And you would pay him 100 rupees every week. Now if we calculate what you were paying as interest you were paying 30%. But ever since you started this group you're paying only 2% as interest.

(Kannada)
MI: And the 2% interest also stays within the group. It doesn't go outside. Doesn't go to him. There's almost 1000 to 2000 interest that has been saved up and all of you can access that amount too.
(Tamil)
Voice of woman member: which means our money stays with us
(Kannada)
Male voice from behind: what is the mechanism of repayment. How regularly do they pay
MI:here say you pay one week and don't pay the other week. You come and say "i don't have any money" You say this to the group. But can you say this to the outside lender?
(Tamil)
Voice of woman member: No, we can't. If we do that it'll be very shameful. They don't let us get away with that.

MI: But here
(Tamil)
Voice of women members: Here if we have money then we pay but otherwise we don't
(Kannada)
MI: Here if you've taken a loan you know everybody's problems. If someone has gone through some difficulty in being able to pay back then you are able to tell this to the group and the group makes this adjustment but they?
If someone is born or dead at home it doesn't matter to them. You still have to pay their money back. But here? that's not there. So is this better or that?
Voice of women members: Of course this is better
