A resident recalls the long struggle of 20 years from the time he squatted on the highway in Kandivali East and became a member, to moving into his home.

Since 1979. I used to live in Bandongri, Kandivali East, on the highway.

It was a slum area where I lived.

After that Nagari Nivara Parishad was formed, then they set up this project, of which I became a member.

After that we along with Nagari Nivara Parishad struggled for
20 years against the government to finally got this house.

The struggle gave us the satisfaction of having won, and of
having built our own homes on land we got from the government.

It would be different had we bought the land.

But the triumph of having built one's own home is as fresh today as it was back then. This house is our own.
