Word/Phrase: TRAFFIC
Description: Water Tanker

Word/Phrase:
Mafia (water, garbage, land)
Description:
An informal sovereignty composed of a mix of private garbage collectors and organisers or bore well, water tanker owners and employees of the municipality who float their own timetables for waste collection, and chose their own destination for disposal or drill and supply groundwater from private land. BUT
If government water pipelines don’t reach you, if you produce waste and you need someone desperately to take it off your hands and the system is cracked, who you gonna call? The Mafia. It’s a grave word for this informal sector of garbage-land-water services.
Mafia like Monopoly are games adults play ;)

Word/Phrase: TRAFFIC: WATER TANKER
Description: The sound of the water tanker fades sooner than expected. Round the curve, on the right, it stands being filled with groundwater, dug through borewell, on this private land. This land is the buffer zone of the tank, erstwhile absorbent soil to enrich groundwater resources. Groundwater is a commons in India, however the logic of private property percolates into the underground, determining the social rules of use and by extension paralegal sale and profit.

Word/Phrase: BUFFER ZONE
Description: Buffer Zone is supposed to be a systemic, more-than human, instance of care and revitalisation, demarcating 30m of land around the tank to be fallow, undeveloped. There was a court order to increase this limit to 70m, but that would mean 93% of the construction around the tank would have to be raised to the ground.

Word/Phrase: COMMON WEALTH

Word/Phrase: COMMON WEALTH
Description: Mapping the social relations, in this image is like a game of “YES.AND.”
On the top left is a settlement. Some of them earn a living by collecting, segregating and disposing-off garbage from the surrounding areas that comes in trucks like this one passing. Supposedly in alliance with the garbage mafia (an informal sovereignty composed of a mix of private garbage collectors and employees of the municipality floating their own timetable for pick up and disposal garbage, who are often linked to the land mafia and water mafia. Mafia like Monopoly are games adults play!).
Yes. And. Those who live in this settlement have been accused by the media of burning waste.
Yes. And. The residents of the gated communities from where I can create this image, have been angry with them because of that. Generally gated community dweller consider shanties an eye sore.
Yes. And. The domestic-help in these apartments come from this settlement
Yes. And. The residents of these apartments are known to be the vigilantes noting every pip and squeak of the trucks dumping debris and illegally encroaching upon the lake. They are true activists fighting in favour of garbage segregation and better disposal infrastructure. Putting collective pressure on the Government making changes happen.
Yes. And. This settlement earlier in February 2019 caught fire due to a short circuit and was razed to the ground.
Yes. And. All those living in this area might have learnt to breathe equally shallow in response to the fumes from the waste and the stench from the lake.
Yes. And. On the left of frame is Doddamma temple. Doddamma, goddess Kali's avatar, with the infinite power to deep-clean the body of all sickness.

Word/Phrase: REJUVENATION
Description: A silted old open well located less than 100m from the tank, is filled to the brim with garbage. Covered by tree branches and twigs, it's potential to function like an open well, to collect water and rejuvenate groundwater, isn't being revitalised. Open wells feature in thhe landscape around other tanks in this system. A concerted effort is being made to re-employ the traditional well-diggers, bhovis, to de-silt wells and dig new ones as a groundwater recharge solution, proposed by S. Vishwanath.

Word/Phrase: ENCLOSURES
Description: On the right is Play Mania, one among at least 5 (Kicks on Grass, Play Zone Bellandur, Play Station Badminton Area, Hawks Sports Arena, Spotkick and the now in-ruins sports complex near Sun City coconut grove) privately-owned enclosed recreational areas dotting the boundary of Bellandur tank. At a time when open maidans, like the buffer zone we just walked through where people still play cricket, are considered wasteful land and are shrinking in area, these play pens have been cropping up providing organised recreational services. Play Mania like the other 5 play pens are connected to the popular app. Play-O and GW Sports App, that manages bookings in these recreational facilities. One reason for the concentration of these play pens around Bellandur is because this area, with its residential boom, is close to RMZ Tech Park and many other IT company complexes. Tech employees living in and around this area, in or outside gated enclaves feel (or are fed) the need to counter their sedentary work with organised recreational activities and can afford it.
From the Economic Times 2015: According to sports community app Playo, the graveyard slot gained popularity in the last 1.5 years. Co-founder Karthik Igoor says, “About 35% of the bookings are made for the 8 pm-1 am slot. Popular games are badminton, football and indoor cricket. Takers are between 22 and 36 years and come mainly from Marathahalli, JP Nagar and Bannerghatta.”

Word/Phrase: LIVELIHOOD: Animal Rearing
Description: This path created by dumping construction debris into the tank bed, is used by fisherman catching the only surviving fish variety cat fish and animal farmers to let their coracles into the water so that they can go collect wild grass (Honneyan in Kannada) used as fodder for cattle.
Word/Phrase: LIVELIHOOD: Animal Rearing
Description: This path created by dumping construction debris into the tank bed, is used by fisherman catching the only surviving fish variety cat fish and animal farmers to let their coracles into the water so that they can go collect wild grass, alligator weed (Honngoney in Kannada) and water hyacinth used and sold as fodder for cattle. However, considering the water pollution and toxicity, the fodder is suspected (wisely) by scientists like Tv Ramachandra from IISC (Indian Institute of Science) to be poisonous as well and resulting in the milk from the cows feeding on this fodder to be equally poisonous. However the legacy of a commons continues as harvesting free fodder seems to be more important.

Word/Phrase: CONTAINERISATION
Description: Driving by in this mini-truck, these 20 liter water cans are one of the main sources of potable drinking water in Bangalore, whether you live in slums or gated colonies. You can book a can on "Book A Can" or "Book My Can" water apps with delivery. "Swajal" does the same but additionally enters the originally BBMP market of installing Water ATMs but solar powered. Their Water ATMs use internet of things and machine learning to predict machine failures before they occur. BBMP started Water ATMs in 2015. They sell 20 litres of water for Rs. 5. Some other private Water ATMs sell at Rs. 8. The water market is increasingly becoming more viable. Water in the ATMs is generally drawn from local borewells and is purified through Reverse Osmosis and Ultraviolet Irradiation. Water in the regular cans either comes from Cauvery source or pumped from private, local borewells.
