Travel shot. Railway crossing with Sumo coal dust

We cut across the roads left incomplete by the state through forests controlled by Maoist insurgents and travel through Bastar, Sambhalpur, Rourkela, Kalahandi, Bolangir, Purulia.
A month later we come out on the other side of this mineral rich heart of India - where Sunlight Sena’s upper caste armies ran mining mafias.
This is Dhanbad, home of the finest coking coal, in Bihar - where the British began coal mining 150 years ago, later leaving the open cast mining to private racketeers. They were nationalised in 1971. But the underground fires that began in 1916 still burn. The land sinks. And illegal coal mining continues. Salman Ravi, a journalist who has spent years documenting the fires, the mafia and the Sunlight Sena's excesses accompanies us.

This area we're passing through now, is one with the most fire.

If we had a shower, you would get very good photography.

Did you get those coaches? - Yeah I got them... wagons -
Wagons. Wagons.

Travel shot - Sumo + terrain

Look at the kids playing on this...
- See right side, look

Are you getting the smoke?
- Sir, when both top and bottom are hot it's less visible. If the top cools even slightly, smoke will be visible.

Travel shot sand

Tell me Salman, What is this sand... over here? What is all this sand here for?

- They will drill it inside the ground.
No no, what is it for?
- For drilling purpose.

They drill the sand below, mixed with water.
Just to check the spread of fire...

There are craters in many places, small holes created by fire. And the gases coming out of it, to block that.

Sand is dumped on top of it. So that the gas does not come out, because these are poisonous, toxic gases.
