Yellow Helmet, Water Tank, Labour colony
Labour colonies are essentially built from tin sheets. Inside which, groups of men spend their nights after work. Labour colonies are provided with a tank made of cement and brick. These tanks are filled with water twice a day by a water-tanker-truck. Men have their baths here, some women who live here wash the clothes and utensils around this tank. The architecture of the colonies despite its homogeneity starts to resemble a village. The tank acts like a river or a well around which men and women gather to not just clean-up but also catch up with each other.
We spent a lot of our time around this tank and moved away when someone wanted to have a bath.
This morning while hanging around, we saw that one of the workers had left behind his helmet on the ledge of the tank and its lonely, diluted reflection in water was recorded onto our camera.
This one is a mid-long shot of the reflection. The reflection in this shot is very active as one of the workers was drawing out water from the other end. The cement here cuts the frame on the top left corner.

This particular morning while waiting around, we saw that one of the workers had left behind his helmet on the ledge of the tank and its lonely, diluted reflection in water grabbed our attention.
A mid-long shot of the reflection. In this shot its rather still in the beginning and starts to distort towards the end. A Worker was drawing out water from the other end causing the movement of the ripple to change direction. Men passing in and out adds another layer of oddity in this image. The cement wall of the tank creates a corner on the right top hand side giving this image a sense of geometry which mimics that of the metro construction sites.

This one is also a mid-long shot of the reflection and the variation in detail from helmet to a hair oil bottle was perfect for the sequence of men and their cosmetics for our third film Distance."
