Summary: In 2004, hundreds of families were forcibly evicted from a section of Mandala in Mankhurd. All attempts to rebuild were crushed and the land has since remained unoccupied. Housing through various government schemes was promised but never materialised. Meanwhile, some families moved into other parts of Mandala, some left for other bastis.
In May 2015 just before the onset of the monsoon, Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao Andolan initiated a Ghar Haq Satyagraha. Over the next few days, over a thousand people returned to rebuild their homes. Teams were constituted to draw maps and mark boundaries for the various bastis. Then on the night of the 25th(?), people brought in bamboo and vinyl sheets and began to build. The monsoon had set in by this time. The Satyagraha had timed this so. The hope was that the houses would not be demolished in the rains as per a High Court order in the Olga Tellis case.
But on the 30th of June, over 200 police people and MHADA authorities arrived and supervised the demolition of the structures. One rumour was that the land was being handed over to MMRDA to build a car-shed for the Metro project. In the next few days, a boundary wall of tin sheets came up and security guards were positioned along it.
