(Interview conducted in Mandarin)
Interviewer: Where are you from? Are you from nearby?
Worker: I'm local.
Interviewer: How long have you been working here?
Worker: About 13 years.
Interviewer: So you started working at the port right after graduation?
Worker: I first interned at Gree for 10 months, and started to work at the port around 2003-04.
Interviewer: What do your family do?
Zhuhai International Container Terminal, Gaolan
Worker: It's like learning how to use chopsticks, you started from an early age. Same for us, we learn gradually and share experience with each other. After a while, it becomes part of your brain. Now you get into the crane and instinctly know how to operate it. If you are new to the job, the crane would be very swingy. It's just habit.
Worker: You have people looking up, down, left, right -- it's an old joke at the port, there are people for every direction.
Interviewer: You look very buff. Is it because of your job?
Worker: No, I was trained as an athlete. I gained a lot of weight after I started working. When I was in school, I had training everyday. Now my job is a different matter.
