INT. ALIYA's HOUSE - DAY
Aliya skims over a touch-pad with a digital pen. As the pointer tracks through a black and white photograph, a mechanical female voice guides her.
The photograph shows a busy junction. To the right is an auto-rickshaw with a male passenger leaning out to cough. The view of the auto is frontal but angled slightly away, such that it's right profile is visible. Almost at the centre of the frame is a uniformed worker cycling away - only his back is visible. To his left, a young man stares blatantly into the lens. He is frozen mid - stride. There is a policeman in the background and a few strewn pedestrians.
With Aliya is her boyfriend VINAY but all that is visible is the surface she's working on and part of her right hand. Vinay has an anglicised accent.

VINAY (O.S.)
Photographic light is not realistic or natural. It is not artificial either. Rather-
ALIYA
Wait.
VINAY (O.S.)
Ok, baby.
She continues her work on the image. The mechanised voice rattles off the commands as her stylus hovers around. Vinay comes up beside her, watching her work, on his knees.
VINAY (CONT'D)
What are you doing?
(beat)
That looks nice.
ComPUTER FEEDBACK
Edit... Undo.
AlIYA
...this one?
VINAY
Show me again.
ComPUTER FEEDBACK
Edit... Redo.
ViNAY
Hmm... that looks better.
Do you want the background so dark?
aliya
Yeah.
VINAY
It has come out well.
(kisses her on the cheek)
It's good.
He leans away and sits back down. She carries on editing.
ALIYA
Are you still reading it?
VINAY
Oh I'll read it for you and put it on your iPhone. I couldn't find the podcast version though.
I found Zizek and the debate between those Pondicherry based photographers-
ALIYA
Where the hell did you find that?
VINAY
Well... It's an exclusive torrent club.
Aliya half-turns and speaks. She doesn't swivel enough to face him directly.
ALIYA
You are an ass because I specifically told you to invite me once you get it!
VINAY
Oh, I did!
She sighs and returns to her edit.
ALIYA
Are there any more podcasts on image editing software with audio support?
VINAY
I can search through the archives. There is actually a forum for photographers with a sticky page for tactile photography. I invited you as soon as I came across it.
ALIYA
You did?
VINAY
Mmhmmm...
Oh that is what I just said!
AlIYA
Umm, I didn't get it. I'll check my mail.
Vinay sits up.
VINAY
Are you done?
He kneels beside her and looks at the tablet.
VINAY (CONT'D)
Okay, it's good. So...
Vinay stands up and paces about as he reads from a book. Aliya continues working on the image.
Photographic light is not realistic or natural, it is not artificial either. Rather, this light is the very imagination of the image, it's own thought. It does not emanate from one single source but from two different ones. The object and the gaze.
ALIYA
Hmm...
VINAY
Oh, you didn't like it!
ALIYA
No no... It's an interesting thought. I mean... He writes theory like poetry.
Vinay stops pacing and leans over the table on which Aliya's been working.
VINAY
He does!
(beat)
Did you finish the Dawkins book?
ALIYA
Yeah, almost.
(beat)
I went through this journey of possibilities. Bats echolocate, right? So they sense shape, size and movement through sound. They can even associate colours through sound right?
