Summary: We were
introduced to Bala Johnson through a string of friends and we met at her school.
At 55 Bala decided she needed to do something new and started learning
Hindustani Classical music. A few years later, she started a small school for
children from villages surrounding Raison and in searching for a music teacher
for her school, she stumbled upon Chandra Kiran – a state level volley ball
player who was from a family of musicians.
The
energy in Chandra Kiran’s classes and indeed in the entire school is one of
playfulness. The telling moment when we were filming one music class was
watching two students from another class peep in through the door and secretly
join in on the music.
