Summary: The Brahmaputra is such a majestic river that at times it takes over the otherwise stunning landscape like some over achieving sibling. As most siblings go the rivalry is quite apparent. The bigger and elder sibling swells with pride and floods the landscape and marks its territory. Mother Nature then steps in and puts the elder in his place and the younger one can relax, for a while that is, before this entire farce repeats year after year.
Because of this the island is surrounded by expansive grey sand banks. The matt texture of the grey sand and the glossy nature of the small streams of water are the makings of a black and white photographer’s wet dream.
The island itself is said to be the largest freshwater island in the world. Its approximately 90 km long and about 11 km wide. Most of the island is flat and filled with paddy fields and attracts birds of a variety of colour and sizes. Because of the regular flooding, many houses are built on stilts and all the roads are elevated by a minimum of 4-6 feet.
