Summary: In Luiliang we stayed at the home
of Dualu and Jogin Tamai. They belong to the Mishmi tribe. Jogin loves having people over. He
loves to hear stories and share many of his own. Quite frequently travellers
come over and spend a few days at their house: usually it’s a researcher, or a bird
watcher, or a journalist or sometimes, two random people out in search of a
song.
Jogin took us for walks around
Luiliang and every now and then he would walk into someone’s house and say, hey
I brought two people over, let them see your place. This would lead to
conversations over many glasses of rice beer, and then onward we go before
stopping for more friendly chats and more rice beer.
Jogin’s parents also live with him.
We couldn’t really communicate with them as we speak only Hindi, English and a
smattering of Tamil. But they would keep walking over towards our room and
checking up on the fire, making sure we had eaten and were comfortable and
warm. Often they would just sit in front of us and smile. We would smile and
nod and this would continue for many minutes many times a day. It was
incredible to have long conversations without saying a word and everything that
needed to be said could be seen in the eyes and the smile.
We were also incredibly fortunate
and honoured that his parents, Waisai
and Teso Tamai, sang for us.
These
songs are ritual chants, which have a repetitive melody and beat, but with
changing, often improvised, lyrics, depending on whether they accompany death,
or healing, or festivities. The drums and the gong are not meant to be played
inside the house except on certain occasions, so we had to film these outdoors.
We
found out later on, that the songs too are not meant to be sung out of place,
and so somewhere in the lyrics there is a stanza that goes something like
"please forgive us for singing this out of place, but these two people
have come from really far to hear our song, and we don't want to disappoint
them." Another stanza somewhere wishes us luck on our travels and good
health.
