Summary: Dibuli Miuli is an expert weaver and a fiercely independent woman. Despite having a large family, she insists on living alone and doing everything by herself. Half way through our filming with her, she disappeared indoors to put on a necklace, one of her most precious and ancestral pieces of jewellery. The story goes that a thief once tried to kill her to steal this necklace. She physically beat him up and threw him out of the house. No one ever tried to steal from her again.
We went to Roing, where Dibuli Miuli lives, certain that we would have problems finding vegetarian food for ourselves. Imagine our surprise when we heard about the women of the Idu Mishmi tribe, who are almost completely vegetarian! The Idu Mishmis worship the Sun Goddess Intaya, often with the help of the shamans in the community, who use music, among other things, for prayer and healing. Dibuli Miuli’s late husband was one of the most respected and powerful shamans. She is one of the few left in the community who still remembers all of the music, which she shared with us.
Dibuli Miuli sang for us many Idu Mishmi songs, most of them related to harvest or prayer, and one, which was the lament of a young girl who has no suitors. While sitting at her loom, the girl is calling out to anyone who may hear her, to say that she is as yet unmarried.
When we went to visit her the next day she was weaving at a type of loom that we hadn’t seen before, and as we filmed her, we requested her to sing the lament of the young girl. She was really tickled and said, “Well, people will think that I am the unmarried young girl.”
The loom that Miuli uses is one of the simplest of the several kinds that we saw all over the north east. With just a simple free standing vertical frame, she weaves intricate designs, making clothes mostly for her children and grandchildren.
