Summary: Schools which are located between the stretch of Jogeshwari and Andheri, demanded for donation if kids from Bandra Plot’s slum wished to take an admission for any class in their school. Muslim Youth Association decided to organize a campaign at Jula Maidan with YUVA’s support to fight against the malpractices in the education system. So the objective of anti-donation campaign was basically against the malpractices in admission procedures of these schools that denied the access of basic amenities of a person. Moreover, families from these slums were economically backward who couldn’t oblige to the school’s stance- Pay Donation, Get Admission. And on top of it, children were bright, smart and had an affinity towards learning.
It is a one day progamme campaign, conducted on 19thJune, 1994. It started early in the morning with a rally, involving 100 to 150 kids. Impactful announcements against the demands of donation were made known. CBO (Community Based Organization) organized a drawing competition on Anti-Donation theme among kids; best paintings were awarded with prizes. They received prizes by Mr MInar Pimple, YUVA’s Director.
Pamphlets were distributed to raise awareness about the issue. Footfall for the campaign at Jula Maidan witnessed approximately 300 people including children. Various performances were conducted. Children actively participated in reciting poems, singing songs to express their opinions and idea about the donation practice in schools. Meaningful poems were recited. One such fine demonstration is:
“Hum kehthe hai bhul ke paise, talim ki baaat karo,
Vah kehthe hai bekar ki baato mein humara waqt barbad mat karo.
Hum kehthe hai garib baccho ko talim se savar do,
Voh kehthe hai baccho ko bhulkar paise ki baat karo”
Smita Patil theatre’s artist also performed a street play based on the issue. The programme ended with people signing the petition against the donation practice.
