Summary: Sanjukta Panigrahi was one of the foremost disciples of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. She trained with him before spending a few years studying dance at Kalakshetra. There, she met her life partner, the composer and singer Raghunath Panigrahi. Famed for her intuitive brilliance as a performer, many of Odissi's iconic compositions (in the Kelucharan Mohapatra style) were created on her. She spent some time at Eugenio Barba's International School of Theatre Anthropology, creating collaborative work with other artists at Odin Teatret. In 1997, aged 52, Sanjukta Panigrahi succumbed to a long battle with cancer.
Over the course of her career, she was the recipient of several awards and honours, including an SNA award and the Padma Shri.
