Incidents and Developments
Governor of Paktia is giving information to the media delegation about the success of development projects in this province which have taken place due to the goodwill of His Highness, the king. This project which is running under the Government of Germany is playing a great role in the betterment of economic, social and cultural life of people of Paktia.
Most important tasks of this project include increase in harvesting of agricultural farms, improvement of seeds, implementation of chemical process, protection of plants from agricultural diseases, cultivation in desert area and their observation and care, protection of crops from flood, program of preparation of food through technical means, honey bee keeping and finding water resources.
In those parts of this project's site where there is less water or no water, work of digging deep wells is going on through modern drills and machines. This water irrigates agricultural lands and provides hygienic drinking water to people as well. For betterment of irrigation system, such arrangements have been made so that it should not be absorbed and wasted in streams and canals like it used to happen in the past. But with construction of siphons and proper streams a sufficient amount of water could reach the agricultural lands. Besides the reforms in cropping of eatables in agricultural system, specialists of this project make efforts day and night for generalization of vegetables and reformation of their species. Under this project, now some store rooms are made in Zahir Shahi garden only for storage and preservation of potato seeds where these seeds can be kept technically till the time of cultivation. In the same manner, German specialists with help of faculty of economics, Kabul University have gathered a row of statistics for knowing the rates of vegetables and their economic requirements, so that on basis of that data increase of cultivation of these eatable items should be fixed.
Besides the Melmakot Garden, 310 species of vegetables have been cultivated on a new land and their cropping is quite satisfactory. In Melmakot Garden, in order to make an experimental area, two hundred thousand fruit trees have been cultivated. Almost ten thousand of them have cross breed. All trained personnel are working in this laboratory. They are not only busy in cross breeding and bringing up of these seedlings but also give consultation to agriculturists of the other parts also as per their agricultural experiments.
There is a huge forested region in Kotaki, and Paktia Province developmental project of forests' project is being implemented on 25000 acres of land. Similarly, experimental tasks have been done in other parts of Paktia province and husbandry of forest plants have been planted for increase of jungles.
This place is the centre of the jungle's project and a big establishment of carpentry and sawing wood. Project of Kotaki jungles has taken up a wide area. In this place there are forty family houses, store rooms, schools, big parks, equipments and tools of workshop and modern German machinery for sawing and carpentry. A meteorology center is also working in this area. Outside this area, lots of seeds of wild trees have been cultivated in wide nurseries, for greenery of the barren land. In 150 to 200 thousand acres of land, where the jungles have reduced, will be green again. This work is going on continuously. As per a German specialist those sapling which are in plastic bags would change this area back to jungle in five years. Earlier when there were no machinery for cutting the trees, with cutting of one tree, lots of other trees would be affected, but now sawing machines of Paktia Project are doing this work technically. Even the trees that are being cut get new strong branches through technical equipments and grow in to trees again in few years time. Transportation of these cut trees also takes place with the same technical method.
In this portion, you are watching those workshops which are repairing the machinery and tools of the project. In the same manner, there is a plant of sawing dry wood where big logs are being sawed into shapes in different sizes. Machines have taken the place of hand work. It is both technical as well as economic. In the meantime the work is done with speed and easily. In the past when this work was done manually, it had 50% wastage. Now not only wastage of cut trees is being prevented but also for covering the barren field of jungles, activities are done with modern and technical equipments.
