Summary: The 3rd International Odissi Festival was organised by IPAP between December 26 - 30, 2006 in Bhubaneswar. Dedicated to the memory of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, the festival also saw the construction of a gigantic open-air dance theatre in the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya campus. The daylong performances included leading and upcoming Odissi dancers. The festival also made space for seminars, Odissi music and lecture demonstrations.
Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia , Kakoli first started learning Odissi at the age of 8 under the tutelage of Ramli Ibrahim. Since 1998 Kakoli has been training with Bani Ray and Durga Charan Ranbir. Kakoli has consistently learned and trained in the style of Deba Prasad Das for the past 21 years. Having performed extensively in the tri-state area as well as the southwest, Kakoli performs regularly in England with her sister – Mitali Dev. Professionally, Kakoli works for The Economist magazine in New York City. She was associated with the Trinayan Collective.
Alicia Pascal-Braithwaite was born in Brooklyn, NY. She performed Odissi dance for the first time at the age of 15, one year after attending a Hare Krsna festival. It was at this festival that she witnessed Odissi dance for the first the time and met her first teacher, Deva Deva Jagatpate Das. Alicia’ s study and training in dance stopped for nine years, in order for her to complete her education. Soon after graduating with a masters degree in Speech Language Pathology, Alicia met and continues to train and perform in the United States and India with Bani Ray and Durga Charan Ranbir. In addition to Odissi, Alicia also studies Bharatanatyam with Kamala Ceasar and Jaan Freeman.
