Tellavision Mumbai: demonstration, locomotion, television
Director: Shaina Anand
Duration: 00:19:45; Aspect Ratio: 1.333:1; Hue: 63.853; Saturation: 0.028; Lightness: 0.383; Volume: 0.289; Cuts per Minute: 58.796; Words per Minute: 109.141
Summary: Tellavision Mumbai is a documentation of one delicately poised edge of global conflict, a documentation of public action post September 11. This rough cut starts with boarding the train at Bandra station. Now from the train, sometimes from the road, one gets a peak into Mumbai along the city's lifeline – its Suburban Railway Line. Slums, mills and crowds of people. Finally, destination reached... Currey Road where an antiwar protest is taking place. A street play is performed to show how India and Pakistan are re-aligning to America's whims. On the train journey back, more of Mumbai's landscape is revealed till the filmmaker turns the camera on the media and its coverage of what is referred to as the world's first television war – America's war in Afghanistan. We see news clippings from BBC, CNN, NDTV and other channels. We watch Bush try to justify his 'war against terror' as the filmmaker deftly parallels these arguments with similar statements made by Chief Minister of Gujarat and controversial right wing Hindu hardliner Narendra Modi.

Opening scene: Weighing machine at Bandra station with a colourful light display while Voice announces train timings over loud speaker. Soon more of the station becomes obvious and trains are seen leaving the station on first the eastern and then the western lines. The display also shows a countdown. The train leaves the station to reveal a view of sunset over the portion of the Mithi river that empties into Mahim creek, the streets and the slums.

Back to the railway track, and watching the trains pass by from the ladies compartment in a Mumbai local. One of the women is curious about what filmmaker Shaina Anand (SA), is finding so interesting that it is worth filming. The train stops at Lower Parel Station. Shaina gets off at Currey Road station on the Harbour Line. People are walking up and down the ramp. One can hear demonstrators shouting out slogans as she leaves the station.

A street play begins with actors playing George Bush, Pervez Musharraf and Atal Bihari Vajpayee. IT starts with Bush 'terrorizing' the people gathered with the toy machine gun in hand.
The protesters
The then General Musharraf even holds a cardboard missile. Vajpayee is welcoming Bush, offering him unquestioning support and subordination. At which, the protesters start shouting anti Bush slogans. ?--
? in a green
salwar kameez kicks at Bush. Bush calls out to Musharraf, who comes marching in and proceeds starts to threaten the people with the bomb, while Bush first stands behind him, and then shoots at the activists. Then Vajpayee comes in, and is bowing with alacrity as he swears his unquestioning support (like a
chamcha or sycophant for his 'war on terrorism.' Bush hands him the gun just as the protesters start sloganeering again and then walks around the circle of activists with his hands on both Vajpayee's and Musharraf's shoulders. Soon, the group has closed in on the three and proceed to tie them up. The three scream for help and Vajpayee rues his mistake because he doesn't want to lose his vote bank in the upcoming elections. The group continues to shout anti American Slogans.
A Voice Over (VO) of ?--? continues....

Back on the train with a travel shot of mills in Parel, shops, roads, pedestrians, etc with many voice overs ranging from BBC radio to news pieces on September 11 and the aftermath as Stock exchanges across the globe fall.
Voice over - Hindi:
Voice over - English: We call on the United Nations to evolve a consistent definition for acts of terrorism and speedily set up a ?third? International Criminal Court which can try and if convicted punish perpetrators of acts of terrorism and other crimes against humanity.
We ?plead? Exploitation of labour by capitalists the world over and the oppression of people through wealth and political, economic and social might is a kind of violence which working people are subjected to in all countries and continents of the world.
Sound of radio tuning
Voice over of an American News Anchor on TV: The famous New York Skyline are no longer so familiar.
The twin towers are gone, replaced with gloom and smoke and ash.
This is a city in shock.
World Stock Markets have been rocked by the events in New York and Washington. Moods are similar to those seen during the 1987 crash.
Voice of News Anchor in Hindi: It is a really strange situation and it's hard to make predictions at this moment... as to how bad the face of things will be. India's Stock Exchange and economy... to what extent is it linked to America?
Song playing: You are beautiful... but you are not God. We won't worship you.
Voice of anchor on TV News channel: If there's too much up=down in the US Stock Exchange, isn't the impact more here...?
Expert Answers: You speak of America... our exports are already negative... growth, that is... and if recession hits there then, our exports will fall further.
Q: And if there's a lot of volatility in currency...If the Rupee takes a beating...
A: This will create a lot of uncertainty and instead of money coming in, it will go out.
Second thing.... the Foreign Institutional Investment that coms into our stock markets, that money will start moving away from here.
Third thing, the Foreign Direct Investment that American companies want to make, those plans will be put on hold. And those monies will not come in either.
American newsreader voice over: So the financial pain besides the obvious physical pain could be quite pronounced. That is something were watching very closely...
Radio tunes into another channel.
Dar Es Salaam, Kampala, Auckland, St Petersburg...
The markets today tumbling right from the opening bell Dow Jones
Industrial plunging more than 650 points.
The effect was as dramatic in Latin and South America with the Brazilian Bovespa falling some 9%. Elsewhere in London Market, it fell 5% ?....? France, it was down 7% against the Euro and the Japanese yen. These are all classic panic reactions similar to 1987. But there is a fundamental reason why this disaster may have a long term economic effect...
This is the market and business news from World Business Report (BBC)
This could be the worse losses from a man-made disaster ever.
A trillian dollars in market capitalisation was ripped out of our financial ranks. A Trillian dollars!
George Bush: We are the one country today, committed, unified in the pursuit to find and punish and obliterate, those who committed that horrible act against this great nation.
