Summary: This video is part of a collection documenting the events of three days in #AD4, a slum colony in Ahmedabad city, after the burning of Hindu activists on the Sabarmati Express at Godhra station on Feb 27th, 2002.
The Godhra killings were shocking in themselves, but the Hindu right-wing's systematic targeting of Muslim citizens for three days after Godhra shook the faith of all who had believed the country to be a secular democracy.
For three days – Feb 27th, 28th and March 1st - the state government and state police allowed the right-wing mobs to "retaliate". They raped, looted, burned and murdered freely. We know this through thousands of first-hand accounts related by the victims and witnesses of the rampaging mobs and indifferent government agencies.
About a month after the post-Godhra carnage, citizen journalists formed the Shared Footage Group that travelled through the relief camps, decimated slums and housing societies to record people’s accounts of what happened in those three days. The stories are varied. Victims in some cases comprised Dalit Hindus, and saviours, in some instances, included local political leaders and policemen with a conscience.
The story of this Basti, (locality) told through these events here, is relatively painless. Relatively, because people lost everything they possessed, but remained alive. Here is their telling of what happened to them in their own homes in those 'days of calamity' or "qayamat ke din".

Another woman says that Muslims are not the problem. Outsiders came and caused problems.

The women continue to tell of the escape over the wall.

The women say they took their kids and ran. They left their things behind, but just tried to save their lives.

They have left an exit open. They'd left this open knowing that there could be a situation at any time that required an escape route. An iron door was fitted there, narrow enough for one person at a time to enter or leave.

She says they stayed in the government colony 7 months. When their houses were rebuilt they came back to their slum.

They did not go to stay in the relief camp. They were invited in by their Muslim friends but they felt that since they were Hindus, it was safe enough for them outside. The Muslims in the government colony provided for them for 15 days, then their local leader gave them food and helped them rebuild their houses. Once things settled a little, their men started going out to work again. When kitchen utensils were provided by their leader they began to cook their own food.

The leader helped them fill forms applying for relief and they then received compensation from the government. They received between Rs.12,000 and Rs. 25,000. They say that they're grateful to their leader for seeing that they received some compensation, since they didn't stay at the relief camp. Also for his providing them with food and medicine for 7 months.
